How does Functional Movement Training work?

Through the use of functional movements and stretches Functional Movement Training facilitates the deep postural muscles of the body. While facilitating these posture muscles, more superficial muscles will be inhibited, eventually educating the body to recruit the correct muscles for posture. This improved function will alleviate the strain on other muscles allowing them to perform more efficiently. The movements will also help to break down compensations that have built up in the body over time. This facilitation of posture muscles and the breakdown of compensations will restore function and symmetry, relieve chronic pain, and lead to an increase in strength and endurance.

What is a posture compensation?

A posture compensation develops due to misalignment in the body. The posture muscles become unable to perform their job of keeping an upright stance and opposing gravity. The body will take any measures necessary to keep from succumbing to gravity and falling over. Therefore, more superficial muscles may be facilitated for this task. Superficial muscles were not designed for this and are not the most efficient muscles for the work. Over time this can cause even more misalignment, dysfunction and ultimately pain. This can also lead to a breakdown of other systems of the body, joints, tissues, nerves etc… Functional Movement training will educate the body to recruit the correct muscles for specific tasks, creating a more balanced and harmonious system.

Who can benefit from Functional Movement Training?

Almost anyone and everyone can benefit from Functional Movement Training. Whether treating chronic pain or looking to improve athletic performance, functional movement training is beneficial. Functional Movement Training puts healing into the clients hands, empowering them with the knowledge to heal themselves.

How does Functional Movement Training work with Chiropractic care?

During a chiropractic adjustment, the chiropractor uses the muscles of their body to move the bones of the patient into a more favorable position. This can be very therapeutic however, unfortunately if the patient is dysfunctional, gravity will immediately begin to move those bones back into an unfavorable position, requiring another visit to the chiropractor. Adding functional movement training to your chiropractic care can be greatly beneficial. The chiropractor will adjust you into a functional position, the client then reinforces this at home with functional movement training, thereby holding adjustments longer. By facilitating the posture muscles at home, the client is in essence adjusting themselves. This can have a major impact on chiropractic treatment, greatly accelerating the timeline for pain relief.

What can I expect from a Functional Movement Training appointment?

The first consultation will be to evaluate and pinpoint the clients individual dysfunctions, connect these dysfunctions to the pain/discomfort they are experiencing and formulate a plan for training. At each appointment the client will be given a series of exercises ranging in time depending on individual needs and levels of dysfunction. The client will learn the exercises, perform the sequence with the trainer to ensure correct form and gauge the body’s response to the exercises.  The client will then do the sequence daily at home. Follow up appointments will consist of evaluation and a new sequence. Each appointment is working toward the goal of the client becoming comfortable and knowledgeable enough to heal themselves with minimal assistance from the trainer.  Appointments can be conducted in person or virtually.

Do I need to be physically fit to do the exercises?

These exercises are gentle movements to encourage function, symmetry, mobility and pain relief. The trainer will choose exercises specifically tailored to the clients needs and abilities. They do not require any specific level of fitness.

How many appointments does it take to see changes?

Each individual will have different results depending on the level of dysfunction, abilities, time constraints etc… The goal of Functional Movement Training is to set up each client so they are able to treat themselves as soon as possible. Most people will need approximately 4-8 sessions in order to achieve this.
